When most people hear T1, they think data.

However, you can also use a T1 for your voice traffic. This can help save money as well provide better service if you are having issues with telephone lines such as static or no dial tone.

This is because a lot of incumbent service providers, the big guys left standing after divestiture, are not maintaining their copper lines as well as they could be as they move more towards fiber.

Businesses that have a handful of POTS (analog) lines up or as many as a hundred find that when they have trouble with their lines, the phone company will come out to repair it, only to have issues days later on another line.

This is because only some of the copper pairs used for service are working well. Because the incumbents aren't maintaining the copper as they used to, they take good pairs and move them to where the bad ones are. It's basically putting a band-aid on, a temporary fix.

A T1 coming in over copper uses a single pair as well. All the phone company needs to do is find one good pair to use for the T1 and you are set.

A local T1 has 24 channels and can replace 24 lines. Voice T1 pricing, like data T1's are distance sensitive. With a POTS line around $25-$30 when you add in fees and taxes, and a local T1 in most urban areas of the country around $300, when you get to ten or more lines it may be a good time to consider a voice T1.

When calculating the difference, it is always a good idea to factor in a couple of POTS lines for backup. Even though most T1's have service level agreements (SLA's) guaranteeing up to 99.9% up-time, there is always that small percentage of time that the T1 can go down.

In that case, you want to have some backup in place to have some calls temporarily forwarded.

Besides the local T1, you also have long distance T1's, integrated T1's combining voice and data, and dynamic T1's combining voice and data using voip.
